Sir,
You are well aware that sacrificing animals for spiritual reasons as a part of religious ritual is legally forbidden in India.
It is however quite painful & immensely concerning to note in this regard that in spite of existence of a stringent regulation against practice, countless numbers of different animals like buffaloes, goats, camels, ducks, hens etc are being slaughtered everyday in a range of religious rites across the nation.
It is a subject of shame & disgrace that West Bengal too is no exception to such social wickedness. As for instance, in some of the Primary schools of Bankura district, there is practice of sacrificing animals in front of school children on the occasion of “Manasa Puja” (worship of Manasa, a goddess of Hindus). This practice of utter brutality is performed every year, which without doubt generates an adverse effect into the young minds of school children.
The organizers and arrangers of such ritual are again going to recur it during the third week of August this year. The local administration is astoundingly silent on the issue.
For the last few years we, the Science and Rationalists’ Association of India had been combating against such brutal activities in school premises.
We are certain that you will duly comprehend the severity of the circumstances and will send your kind instruction (s) to the concerned officials to enquire & set off necessary measures towards abolition of such evil practices from places where education is imparted.

হাসপাতাল কর্মীর হাসপাতাল চত্বরে ঝাড়ফুক তুকতাক
বাঁকুড়া সম্মিলনী মেডিকেল কলেজ ও হাসপাতালের ইন্ডোর বিভাগের পিছনের দিকে অবস্থিত স্টাফ কোয়ার্টারের সামনে একটি কালি মন্দির আছে যেখানে হাসপাতালেরই চতুর্থশ্রেণীর এক কর্মী সতীমা সহিস প্রতিদিন বিভিন্ন বহিরাগত মানুষের অসুখ, ভুতে পাওয়া, নজর লাগার সমাধান হিসেবে তাদের ওপর ঝাড়ফুক-তুকতাক করেন। দূর দুরান্ত থেকে আসা অসহায় রোগীরা তাদের দুর্বল মুহূর্তে সতীমার কাছে গিয়ে আরও অসুস্থ এবং নিঃস্ব হচ্ছেন। ঝাড়ফুক করতে গিয়ে অসুস্থ মানুষের ওপর অবৈজ্ঞানিকভাবে অত্যাচার চালানো হচ্ছে এমনকি নাকে মুখে লঙ্কার ধোঁয়া দেওয়া হচ্ছে।

এসব দেখে স্বভাবতই মনে প্রশ্ন জাগছে, যেখানে আমাদের দেশের ‘দ্য ড্রাগ এন্ড ম্যাজিক রেমিডিজ (অবজেকশ্যনাবেল অ্যাডভারটাইজমেন্ট)অ্যাক্ট-১৯৫৪’ অনুসারে অলৌকিক চিকিৎসায় রোগ সারানোর চেষ্টা করা বেআইনি সেখানে হাসপাতাল চত্বরে কর্তৃপক্ষের নাকের ডগায় দিনের পর দিন এধরনের অলৌকিক চিকিৎসা ব্যবসা চলছে কার মদতে? স্বাস্থ্য বিভাগের একজন কর্মী হয়েও সতীমা সহিস হাসপাতাল চত্বরে বেআইনি চিকিৎসা ব্যবসা করলে এবং হাসপাতাল কর্তৃপক্ষ সেটি মুখ বুজে সহ্য করলে জনসাধারনের কাছে কি বার্তা পৌঁছবে? জনসাধারণের একাংশ তো ভাবতেই পারেন পশ্চিমবংগ সরকারের স্বাস্থ্যবিভাগ বিজ্ঞানসম্মত চিকিৎসার সাথে সাথে ঝাড়ফুককেও সমান গুরুত্ব দেয়।
আমরা বাঁকুড়ার বহু মানুসের কাছে অভিযোগ পেয়ে গত ২৩ আগস্ট ২০১০ ওই মন্দিরে যাই এবং ঝাঁড়ফুক চলাকালীন প্রতিবাদ করি। ইতিমধ্যেই আমাদের একজন সদস্য যে রোগী সেজে গেছিল, সতীমা তার কাছে রোগ সারানো মারফত টাকা দাবি করে। প্রতিবাদ চলাকালীন সতীমার বেআইনি ব্যবসার সাঙ্গো্পাঙ্গোরা চলে আসে, বিস্তর ভিঁড় হয় ও ব্যাপক ঝামেলার সৃস্টি হয়। ঘটনাটি কভার করতে থাকা নিউজ টাইমের চিত্রসাংবাদিককেও বেশ ঝামেলা পোহাতে হয়। কোনো সূত্র থেকে খবর পেয়ে বাঁকুড়া সদর থানা পুলিশ পাঠায়।
যুক্তিবাদী সমিতি সহ বাঁকুড়ার সমস্ত শুভবুদ্ধিসম্পন্ন মানুষেরা স্বভাবতই এ ধরনের ঘটনার তীব্র নিন্দা করি এবং আশা করি হাসপাতাল কর্তৃপক্ষ এই ঘটনার পুঙ্খানুপুঙ্খ তদন্ত করে দোষীদের বিরুদ্ধে উপযুক্ত ব্যবস্থা গ্রহন করে কুসংস্কার মুক্ত সমাজ গঠনের কাজে সাহায্য করবেন।

Bankura Rationalist Against Child Marriage
TALDANGRA is a village about 27KM away from BANKURA TOWN towards south.HOUSIABAD is a rural village nearer to TALDANGRA.PUTUL TUDU,12yrs old child of HOUSIABAD was forced to marry by her family.But a few of the villager was against this marriage.They inform to the BANKURA BRANCH OF SRAI(Science and rationalist's association in India).Finally BANKURA branch able to stop the child marriage and send PUTUL TUDU to "TALDANGRA GIRLS SCHOOL".
জানগুরু গ্রেপ্তার
গত ১৪ এপ্রিল রাতে রাইপুর ব্লকের সোনাগাড়া গ্রামপঞ্চায়েতের লোহামেড়্যা গ্রামের ষাটোর্ধ মহিলা কিরণবালা সর্দারকে ডাইনি অপবাদে মুখে অ্যাসিড দিল প্রতিবেশী জানগুরু মানিক যুগী।মানিক যুগী সেদিন এসে বলেছিল সে জলপড়া দিয়ে কিরণবালার ডাইনি ছাড়িয়ে দেবে। জলপড়াতে মানসিক রোগগ্রস্ত ছেলে সুস্থ হয়ে যাবে এমনকি নিঃসন্তান বৌমার বাচ্চাও হবে বলে দাবি করেছিল মানিক। অমাবস্যার গভীর রাতে মাত্র একজন সঙ্গীকে নিয়ে গোপনে এসেছিল মানিক। দীর্ঘ বছর ধরে অত্যাচারিত পরিবার ভেবেছিল হয়তো বা মানিকই ঠিক। কিন্তু এসব প্রতারকদের মনের আসল খবর কে বা রাখে। জলপড়ার নাম করে সে বৃ্দ্ধা কিরনবালার মুখে ঢেলে দেয় তীব্র অ্যাসিড। অ্যাসিডে মুখ, গলা, বুক, পিঠ, হাত ভয়ঙ্কর ভাবে পুড়ে যায়। আশঙ্কাজনক ভাবে বৃদ্ধাকে রাইপুর গ্রামীন হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা হয়।
খবর পাওয়া মাত্রই যুক্তিবাদী সমিতির পক্ষ থেকে আমরা সেখানে যাই। হাসপাতালে কর্তব্যরত চিকিৎসক, পুলিশ, বিডিও এবং এলাকার লোকেদের সাথে কথা বলি। ডাইনি সংক্রান্ত সমস্যার মোকাবিলায় ওই এলাকায় কুসংস্কার দূরীকরনের লক্ষ্যে যুক্তিবাদী সমিতির পক্ষ থেকে একটি কর্মসূচী নেওয়া হয়।আমরা আমাদের কুসংস্কার বিরোধী স্ট্রীট কর্ণার শুরু করি।২৮ এপ্রিল রাইপুরের বিডিওকে একটি চিঠি দিলাম যাতে আমাদের দাবি ছিল - ঘটনায় দোষী জানগুরু মানিক যুগীর বিরুদ্ধে অবিলম্বে ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হোক এবং কেসটিকে সাধারন মারধোরের ঘটনা বলে অযথা লঘু করে না দেখে যা সত্য সেই ডাইনি সংক্রান্ত কেস দিয়ে তদন্ত হোক। এর সাথে আমাদের একটি অন্যতম দাবি ছিল যে, কিরনবালার চিকিৎসার সমস্ত দায়িত্ব প্রশাসনকেই নিতে হবে। এই চিঠির কপি দেওয়া হয় এস ডি ও, জেলাশাসক এবং পুলিশ সুপারকে।অবশেষে দীর্ঘ টালবাহানার পর গ্রেপ্তার হয় জানগুরু মানিক যুগী। এই জেলার ইতিহাসে জানগুরু গ্রেপ্তার একদম বিরল ঘটনা।

ASTROLOGER IS IN DEEP TROUBLE
Pandit Sitaramji Maharaj was lodg
ed in room no 104 of Hotel Devarshi at Bankura town. He was there since May 13, 2010.
He could make accurate predictions about the future of any person with a mere glance and studying through the palm lines. Further, he can relive anyone from serious hassles ranging from infertility to unsuccessful relations…or just anything possible under the sky. Fees ? Well…that was INR 51 per client for every three predictions.
Yes, that’s what a pamphlet published by Pandit Sitaramji said.
As usual, numerous questions/ queries began to flow in from thousands of people in the local office of the Science and Rationalists’ Association of India, about the logical sanctity of such claims made by Sitaramji.
The association was too eager to bring out the truth. So, a visit to Sitaramji was made in the morning of May 16, 2010, by the members of the association, lead by Biplab Das.
Tarun Rakshit, a member of the association came out with an issue where his wife is unable to bear a child even years after his marriage. Sitaramji’s prescription was instant…” Pay INR 5000 and take a ‘Jantram’ (a talisman)…surely, you will be blessed with a baby by this year”. Tarun is however a bachelor, which the “foreteller” failed to judge.
Chandra Karmakar of Bhairabsthan carried a snap of a girl, whom he said was desperately in love and wanted to marry. Again, Sitaramji promised to solve the issue through “ photograph hypnotism” and charged INR 2800 for the same. The truth is, Chandra doesn’t even know who that girl is. Amazing, isn’t it?
Sitaramji also miserably failed to envisage anything even near to reality in the case of Sudhir Hansda of Harigram, but charged INR 3300 for the same.
Another illustration of his dismal show was about Tuhin Banerjee, a Primary School teacher of Helna Susunia, whom Sitaramji predicted to be suffering from unemployment.
The most apprehending of all was the case of Prasanta Mondal of Bhairabsthan who is a patient of Epilepsy. Sitaramji asserted to heal his disease through “supernatural” means by chanting mantras, which is clearly a criminal offence as per ‘The Drugs & Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisement) Act 1954’.

On that very afternoon of May 16, 2010, Biplab Das, Shyam Das, Buddhadev Roy, Babai and other members of the association charged Sitaramji of hoodwinking and cheating people through his false and unscientific claims. Unable to face such grilling where he was bombarded with questions and challenges, Sitaramji broke down and began to give contradictory statements.
Shortly, members of the association lodged a complaint with the local Police Station (General Diary no 1372 dated May 16, 2010 at Bankura sadar thana).
It was later learnt from the authorities of Hotel Devarshi that Pandit Sitaramji has left the abode.
